‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’ focuses on the large section of Indian society obsessed with America. Four families are shown simultaneously but they are unaware of ach others existence. They only have one common goal- to escape to the US to get rid of their problems. It is the end of the movie that binds them all together.
If you are looking for a regular Bollywood masala flick, then this is not meant for you. It’s not your regular Hindi film where everyone comes to know each other to live happily ever after.
The film is a mix of everything - drama, thrill, romance and crime. In short, it is a master piece.
The film begins with a voiceover introduction of the four stories. The first story is about Tilottima Das Punj (Konkana Sen). She is a Bengali girl married to US-based Hemant (Jimmy Shergill). The two met through the internet and tied the knot. But immediately after the wedding, Hemant leaves for the US and poor Tilottima is left behind with her crazy in-laws.
Tilottima's mother-in-law, an American married to an Indian, doesn't like her one bit and makes her life miserable. The only solution for Tilottima is to escape to the US. But Tillottama has to wait for a year before she can get the visa.
The second story revolves around Salim Rajabali (Irrfan Khan) - a stockbroker. He loves an elder woman, Namrata (Suhasini Mulay), a failed dancer who lures young men.
Salim soon discovers that his love has been cheating on him. But before he can sort things out, he finds himself in a murder case. Salims mother (Saroj Khan) then advices him to move to the U.S before the police gets hold of him for the alleged murder of a police commissioner (Boman Irani).
The third tale revolves around Rahul Bhinde (Ankur Khanna) and Khushbooo (Ayesha Takia). Rahul is a medical student who makes it to the topmost US University. But the problem is his bed-ridden father and because of him, Rahul loses the golden opportunity.
However, his father dies a day before his visa interview and his girlfriend Khushbooo solves out all the financial hurdles in his way and makes arrangements for his trip abroad.
Rajubhai Patel (Paresh Rawal) is the protagonist of the fourth and the final tale. Raju Bhai organizes Gujarathi events and shows in the U.S. He illegally smuggles Indians to the 'land of opportunities'. He is money minded and doesn't give a chance to anybody until they pay a hefty sum of money. Old flame Tara (Ratna Pathak Shah) re-enters his life with a daughter whom she wants to be sent to America so that she could stay away from her drunkard father.
Whether it is Tilottima, Salim, Rahul or Rajubhai - each of them have a valid reason to travel to America. But does this really solve their problems? They think (Or are convinced into thinking) that US, is where they can truly find happiness. With a little help from friends and a bit of fooling around with the US embassy guys in Mumbai, they are all set to follow their dreams. But they don’t know what is in store for them. Well, as far as the end is concerned, it is a shocker. Naseer has made a once in a life time movie.
As far as the acting is concerned, the whole cast has done justice with their roles. However, it is Suhasini who is the surprise package of the film. She bowls over viewers with her new avatar. Paresh Rawal is seen in a new avatar too and has successfully deviated from his daal-chawal stereotypical comic roles.
Naseer has also cast his son Immauddin in the film as a character whose main pastime is to find fault with America, it people and their way of life. However small the role may be, he does come across as a spontaneous actor.
However, the music of the film leaves you upset. In front of the acting and direction, the music stands nowhere.
With this movie, Naseer has proven to be a wonderful director as well. If you ask me whether you should watch ‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’ then I would say….Go watch it today if you like good cinema.
