Former actor and Member of Parliament Vinod Khanna from Gurdaspur, Punjab, passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The news of his demise was revealed by his brother Pramod Khanna. “He passed away at 11.20am. It’s a sad moment for us… We request you all (media) for privacy,” said Pramod.
The 70-year-old had numerous immensely popular Bollywood flicks to his name including “Amar Akbar Anthony,” “Qurbaani” and “Insaaf”.
During the initial part of his career, Vinod played supporting roles. But his handsome looks and impressive acting made him the cynosure of all eyes. He was at his apex of his Bollywood stint during the 1970s and 1980s.
His on screen chemistry with fellow actor Amitabh Bachchan was widely hailed. The duo appeared together in blockbuster films like “Hera Pheri” and “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”. Amitabh reportedly walked out of an interview when he learnt of Khanna’s death. Big B wanted to be by the side of Khanna’s family during this time of immeasurable grief.
As the news of Khanna’s demise spread, numerous Bollywood actors paid their condolences.
“Vinod Khanna was a greatly admired personality. It’s a personal and emotional loss for me as we have been very close and journeyed together in films as well as in politics,” said Shatrughan Sinha, who was Vinod Khanna’s contemporary.
President Pranab Mukherjee, PM Narendra Modi and Sonia Gandhi and various other politicians too mourned Khanna’s death.
Vinod is survived by his wife Kavita Khanna, and four children; Rahul, Akshaye, Sakshi, and Shraddha.
