It was a walk in the park for the Indian batsmen on Day 1 in the one-off Test against Bangladesh being played at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium. At stumps, India was comfortably placed at 356 for 3.
India was off to a poor start when they lost opener K L Rahul for only 2. The team total was also two when Rahul started the long walk back to the pavilion. But that is where the happiness for Bangladesh started and ended.
M Vijay was joined by C Pujara and the two provided a solid platform for the Indian team. While Pujara played the sheet anchor role with a steady 83 (177 Balls, 9 Fours), he fell short of his 11th test century.
Meanwhile, Vijay played briskly and reached his ton in the post tea session. He was eventually bowled by T Islam for 108 (160 Balls, 12 Fours, 1 Six). Skipper Virat Kohli, joined the party when Vijay left. The aggressive right-hander milked the bowling and smashed his 16th century and remained unbeaten on 111 (141 Balls, 12 Fours) at stumps. Ajinkya Rahane too remained unbeaten with a fine made 45 (60 Balls, 7 Fours). India amassed 150 runs for the loss of one wicket in the post tea session.
India will want Kohli and Rahane to continue the good work tomorrow. A formidable total on the board, which looks pretty probable, will put Bangladesh batsmen under pressure right from the word go.
