Narsingh Yadav stands a defeated man as he claims that “Someone has sabotaged my food supplements and water intake”. Wrestler Narsingh Yadav was selected for representing India in the Olympics but a failed dope test has made him resort back angrily,” “I believe that there is foul play involved in this entire episode.”
This is a huge setback for India’s Olympic dreams. The WFI feels that this is an attempt to sabotage the wrestling career of Narsingh Yadav. Last year Narsingh Yadav had earned home a bronze medal at the Worlds after he was victorious at the 74 Kg Olympic quota berth, but this time he stands shrouded in the clouds of controversy. Narsingh Yadav beat Sushil Kumar and bagged his place in the competition but he has got caught in the scandal of a dope test.
This has led to a refusal of his participation in the Olympics and the hurt wrestler has given a statement saying, “I believe that there is foul play involved in this entire episode. Someone has sabotaged my food supplements and water intake. I take pride in the fact that I have competed in every competition, international and domestic, in an honest, fair and transparent manner and I will continue to do so. I am a responsible athlete with an understanding of the country’s expectations and hopes on me. I would never dream of betraying that hope.”
He further stated “I have been a professional freestyle wrestler for over 15 years and I have undergone almost 25-30 dope tests. I have come out clean every single time and never have any of my samples returned positive results. I have undergone three tests in the last month and a half. I appeared for a dope test on the 2nd of June before leaving for a training camp in Bulgaria. I was again tested on my return on the 25th of June and once again on the 5th of July.”
Navin Agarwal, director general, of the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) director general stated the wrestler had tested positive for “”and his B sample was also positive. The results of the B sample were opened in the presence of the wrestler himself. Will Narsingh Yadav be allowed to participate in the Olympics?
The Wrestling Federation of India sides with the wrestler and says that an attempt is being made to sabotage the wrestler. They insist that he has a clean history and a conspiracy is being planned against him. A WFI official has hinted that there may be no “Indian representation in 74kg in Rio” as the wrestler has been handed a provisional suspension. Narsingh has been in a legal battle with Sushil Kumar and both of them have been angling to represent India at the Olympics since ages. The sports ministry’s verdict is awaited on the issue after a detailed consultation with the sportspersons and doctors of the panel.
But Rajeev Mehta, the Indian Olympic Association confirmed there are no chances of Sushil Kumar representing India at the Rio Olympics, stating “Everything is closed as far as entry of athletes is concerned.”
