Eat a purple potato to kill colon cancer cells, say researchers

This is real good news for the patients suffering from the dreaded colon cancer! It seems that research has claimed that purple potatoes are instrumental in preventing the colon cancer from spreading, and they even have the power of destruction of cancer stem cells.

Jairam K.P. Vanamala of the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute has claimed a breakthrough discovery, and stated that the best way to counteract cancer is to destroy the stem cells. The researchers tested the effect of baked purple potatoes in their studies and found out that the extract of the potatoes actually killed the colon cancer stem cells and in this way lead to the suppression of the disease.

The scientists used these potatoes to treat mice that were suffering from colon cancer and were astonished to see the death of the cancer stem cells. The colon cancer tumors were restrained from growing in mice and petri dishes with the compounds constituting the purple potatoes, say the scientists.

Researches deduce that the purple potatoes contain some substances that act at the same time on numerous pathways. According to Vanamala ,the immune function of the gut was regulated by butyric acidaaloo and he confirmed that the effect of this food was seen on chlorogenic acid, anthocyanins , resistant starch, and the destruction of the stem cells was also taking place .

He explained “You might want to compare cancer stem cells to roots of the weeds. You may cut the weed, but as long as the roots are still there, the weeds will keep growing back and, likewise, if the cancer stem cells are still present, the cancer can still grow and spread.”

He further stated “Our earlier work and other research studies suggest that potatoes, including purple potatoes, contain resistant starch, which serves as a food for the gut bacteria that the bacteria can covert to beneficial short-chain fatty acids ,such as butyric acid. The butyric acid regulates immune function in the gut, suppresses chronic inflammation and may also help to cause cancer cells to self-destruct.”

IS it possible that vegetables and fruits that contain bright and colorful rainbow colors may be able to destroy the cancer stem cells? Maybe, say the scientists, after all there is no one specific approach to attack a complex disorder like cancer! Well, the purple potatoes have come under the research scanner and their effect on other types of cancer will soon be studied! It’s a much better option to munch on colorful foods and get a cure for cancer rather than ingest the strong side effect causing drugs. All a person suffering from colon cancer has to do is munch on a purple fleshed potato of a medium or large size daily.

The Research has suggested that now purple potatoes can be used for cancer prevention strategies. Details of the study can be read in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.
