The decision to resign from the post of deputy CM and home minister came within six months of his being sworn as deputy to his father Parkash Singh Badal. Confirming the move by his son, senior Badal said Sukhbir had submitted his resignation.
The fact that Sukhbir could not win an assembly seat within a period of six months after being elected as deputy CM was the reason behind his resignation.
“Once the dates were announced, ruling out Sukhbir’s chances of winning any of the assembly seats before July 22, he thought it was not proper on his part to hold on to the position,” revealed SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) sources.
Meanwhile, CM Parkash Singh Badal forwarded his son’s resignation to the Punjab Governor.
The EC has announced by-polls for three constituencies including Jalalabad, Banur and Kanuwan. Sukhbir is most likely to contest the Jalalabad constituency for staking claim to become deputy CM in case he wins.
Sukhbir, who is currently holidaying abroad, confirmed his resignation.
