Chandigarh, August 13: In a bid to improve the sanitation facilities in rural Punjab, the state government has given a nod to a rural mega project of constructing three lakh toilets in over 12,000 villages of the region.

Newly elected deputy chief minister of Punjab, Sukhbir Badal, said that Punjab, being a progressive state, should do something about people defecating out in the open.

In a meeting with officials of the water supply and sanitation department held on Wednesday, Badal said that modern flush toilets should be provided to the villagers.

He also said, “Quality control has to be touchstone of this project and a nodal officer will be appointed immediately to regularly monitor the quality of work being executed in the rural areas.”

This project is likely to be completed within 18 months with a capital investment of Rs.200 crore.
