Punjab CM Badal's wife Surinder Kaur dies of cancer

Surinder Kaur Badal, wife of Punjab chief minister, Prakash Singh Badal, passed away Tuesday after a 12-day long struggle with cancer at the PGIMER in Chandigarh.

The 72-year-old noble woman was suffering from throat cancer and was undergoing treatment at a VIP room in the hospital since May 12.

But she was admitted to the ICU after her condition worsened two days later. She succumbed to her disease while in the medical institute.

The entire Badal family was staying at the PGIMER during the hospitalization of the guiding light of their family.

A well-placed source said, “She had been under the care of a panel of doctors headed by Dr. Sanjay Jain of PGI’s department of internal medicine. Earlier, she had undergone treatment in the US.”

The cremation ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday evening at the Badal village in Muktsar district of Punjab, as she has spent most of her life at the family house in the village.

Reports claimed that after Mrs Badal’s body was taken out of the hospital, son Sukhbir Singh Badal, the deputy chief minister of Punjab, could not control his outburst.

The chief minister, his daughter-in-law, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and son-in-law, Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon, were also there.

Activists of the Shiromani Akali Dal gathered at the hospital after the death news was out.

“Even former finance minister Manpreet Badal, who parted ways with the Shiromani Akali Dal last year, had visited PGI twice with his father Gurdas Badal and wife Vinu Badal to inquire about her well-being,” added a source at the hospital.

Condolence meeting held in Patiala
Meanwhile, the staff of the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital and the management of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust in Patiala organized a condolence meet on Surinder’s death Wednesday.

Vice chairman of the trust, Dr. Sukhwinder Singh, presided over the meeting, and the chief minister’s wife was remembered for being a religious woman who worked for the upliftment of the weaker sections of the society.
