Punjab’s ex-CM Harcharan Singh Brar passes away
The Punjab government has announced that Brar will be cremated in his native village Sarai Naga (near Muktsar) tomorrow afternoon.
In order to pay homage to the veteran leader, Punjab government has declared 3-day mourning while the Haryana government has announced 2-day mourning from today.
Chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana - Parkash Singh Badal and Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Punjab Governor Gen SF Rodrigues (retd), Haryana Governor Jagan Nath Pahadia and Punjab Congress president Mohinder Singh Kaypee have expressed grief on the sad demise of Brar.
Brar was sworn in as the chief minister of Punjab on Aug. 31, 1995 till Nov. 21, 1996 after the assassination of Beant Singh, the then chief minister. During his 14-month-term as a chief minister, Brar had been credited with the creation of Muktsar and Moga districts in Punjab.
Brar had also been the governor of Haryana from Sept. 24, 1977 to Dec. 9, 1979. He also held the post of the governor of Orissa for six months in 1976.
