Chandigarh, August 3: The fate of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will be decided today evening as the polling for the three assembly seats in Punjab - Jalalabad, Kahnuwan and Banur has commenced today.

Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal's son, Sukhbir Badal, contesting from Jalalabad seat in Ferozepur district, is competing with congress candidate Hans Raj Josan but junior Badal is expecting a sweeping victory.

He had to resign from the post of deputy chief minister due to failure of entering into the state assembly within six months of being sworn in after his nomination.

Akali Dal’s Jasjit Singh ‘Bunny’ is competing against Deepinder Singh Dhillon of the Congress from the Banur district. Earlier this constituency was represented by Jasjit Singh's father and former Punjab cooperation minister Kanwaljit Singh, till his death in a road mishap in March this year.

A total of 21 candidates are contesting in the by-polls, but Akalis and the congress party are the main rivals. It is expected that the Badals would take over in these elections.

The election commission has employed 15 companies of paramilitary forces in the three assembly constituencies to ensure complete security.
