NTPC to set 2,640 MW thermal power plant at Gidderbaha

In a move targeted to enhance development in Punjab, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Punjab in Chandigarh on Thursday.

According to the MoU, NTPC would be setting up a 2,640 mega watts (MW) coal-based thermal power project at Gidderbaha that would cost Rs 15,000 crore approximately.

A spokesman of the Punjab government said that capacity-wise, this would be the biggest thermal project in the state. The pact was inked by Punjab government’s Principal Secretary of Power, Arun Goel and Director of NTPC, I J Kapoor.

“The Punjab government has agreed to facilitate acquisition of land, allocation of water and conveyed in-principle clearance for about 2,316 acres of land and 125 cusecs of water,” said Arun Goel.

A notice, under section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act, has already been issued by the government, for purchase of 2,316 acres for the project.

Financed by NTPC, the facility would include 4 units of 660 MW each. Nearly half of the power generated would be allocated to Punjab.

“NTPC has sought long-term coal linkage from Ministry of Coal and Punjab government will extend cooperation in obtaining the coal linkage for the project,” said Goel.

Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) will also be entering into a power purchase agreement with NTPC, once the project is ready, for purchase of power allocated to it.

The duty on sale of power will be decided by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.
