New test for Australian citizenship
Now, no more questions will be asked about the sports heroes of Australia, but, there will be, of course, a mention about the greatest cricketer, Sir Donald Bradman. This was stated by Chris Evans, Immigration Minister of Australia.
Quipping about the new test, Evans said, “The new test is not a general knowledge quiz about Australia.”
He said that the test is aimed at testing the understanding of the people about the rights, democratic beliefs, and laws of the Australian system. The test is a commitment of the new citizens for the nation.
To become eligible for the Australian citizenship, the test requires the potential citizens to clear at least 75 percent of the questions or about 15 out of the total 20 questions in the test. The old test required 60 percent score for becoming eligible for citizenship.
Another change in the test has been the exclusion of the compulsory questions from the new test. This change has been done to encourage more and more people to become Australian citizens, revealed Senator Evans. “This will ensure that we encourage people to become citizens without the test being a barrier,” he said.
The test checks the applicants’ knowledge about the rights, responsibilities and democratic beliefs of Australia. The test is considered to be fairer than the old one as by removing the mandatory questions from the test, it aims to give equal weight to all questions in the test.
