Nearly 2.5 million Indians Migrants in US

Washington, October 16: According to a latest report released by the Migration Policy Institute, Washington, there has been a considerable increase in the number of Indians migrating to US. The report reveals that the Indian community has increased to nearly 2.5 million in 2007.

The report further adds that between 1820 and 1900, the total number of Indians migrating to United States was merely 700 persons.

Titled Emigration, Immigration and Diaspora Relations in India, the report states that the number of Indians living in US is almost double than the Indians living in the United Kingdom while it’s almost 2.5 times more than the Indians residing in Canada.

Authored by a New Delhi, India based scholar Daniel Naujoks, the report lays bare the recent trends of immigration and migration in India. Out of the total Overseas Citizenship of Indian cards given by the Government of India in March 2009, nearly 43 percent were through Indian embassies in the United States while 13 percent were in the UK.

Indian IT professionals have established their presence in US and have won the trust and faith in their abilities. Meanwhile, the Indian IT industry might lure high-skilled Indians working off-shores to come back, says the report.

Although, the migration of Indians began in the 1960s, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indian migrants due to wide changes in the immigration policies of the countries including Canada and US. The number of Indian immigrants rose from 27,000 in 1986 to 85,000 till 2005.

In 2008, the percentage of Indians getting lawful permanent resident status was nearly 5.7 percent.
