Language training vouchers for new migrants to Canada
The recent step is a part of the project to encourage more newcomers to participate in different settlement programmes and to enable them integrate and become members of the Canadian society in the best possible manner.
Talking about the latest initiative, Jason Kenney, the Canadian immigration minister, said, “Whatever we can do to help newcomers take language training is a step in the right direction.” Kenney said that speaking French or English holds the key to successful employment as well as better integration in the Canadian society.
As per the scheme, the new immigrants will be handed over language training vouchers. The scheme will be in effect for a period of one and a half years and the results of this scheme will be evaluated in 2011. The test for a period of 18 months and costing $250,000, will be funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
2,000 immigrants will be mailed language training vouchers to enable them learn either English or French, the two official languages of Canada. The immigrants, chosen at random in Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia, can contact the local settlement service providers by considering their individual needs and their schedule.
The funding of settlement services being offered to the newcomers in Canada has been tripled since 2006. prior to 2006, the funding was stopped for a few years.
