Curfew in Jalandhar after clashes

Jalandhar, May 25: Curfew has been imposed following clashes between followers of various Dalit bodies and Dera Sachkhand. The violence erupted after getting the news of firing on Sant Niranjan Dass, head of Dera Sachkhand, in Vienna gurudwara.

The protestors pelted stones at vehicles and damaged three buses. They also torched more than 20 vehicles at Prithvi planet. Armed with swords, they burned tyres and blocked the roads at various places in the city including Rama Mandi, Garha road and Nakodar Chowk.

Armed protestors attacked big business houses in the city and also indulged in stone pelting at power stations leading to a power shutdown in different parts of Jalandhar.

There was complete chaos at various NH (National Highways) including Jalandhar-Kapurthala, Jalandhar-Chandigarh, Jalandhar-Ferozepure, Jalandhar-Amritsar, as vehicular traffic was stranded resulting in inconvenience to the commuters.

According to the DC (Deputy Commissioner) of Jalandhar, Ajeet Singh Pannu, the curfew has been imposed keeping in view the safety of the general public. He added that the curfew will continue till the situation becomes normal.
