The report further states the fact that while other countries are curbing annual immigration limits for outsiders, Canada, on the contrary, is maintaining the immigration levels so as to meet short as well as long term economic needs of the country.
Giving details about the immigration plan, Kenney said, “Canada plans to welcome between 240,000 and 265,000 new permanent residents in 2010, the same number of immigrants as in recent years. In 2010, Canada will again welcome more new permanent residents than the average annual intake during the 1990s.”
Talking about the immigration plan for the next year, Kenney said that to provide support to the economy of Canada, the 2010 plan will focus on economic immigration.
Also, there has been an increase in the admission range for immigrants nominated by the territories and provinces which is likely to benefit the nation. Moreover, it will considerably reduce the backlog of people waiting for the processing of their applications. This is because less people will now fall under the federal skilled worker program resulting in quick processing of their applications.
Kenney revealed that the backlog of skilled worker applicants has come down by 30 percent from 630,000 to 425,000. The government sincerely aims to considerably reduce the backlog by processing only those applications that meet the specified conditions
