Badal approves project for reinvigoration of 512 village ponds

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal approved a pilot project worth Rs 33.46 crore for the reinvigoration of 512 village ponds in all the districts across the state.

The CM took this decision in a meeting held at his residence. The meeting was also chaired by Chief Secretary Mr. SC Agrawal, Principal Secretary to CM Mr. DS Guru, Special Principal Secretary to CM Mr. KJS Cheema, Chairman Zila Parishad Ludhiana Mr. Manpreet Singh Iyali, Additional Principal Secretary to CM Mr. Gaggandip Singh Brar, Principal Secretary Rural Development & Panchayats Mr. Jagpal Singh, Secretary Water Supply & Sanitation Mr. PS Aujla, Director Rural Development & Panchayats Mr. Gurdev Singh Sidhu and Chairman PPCB Mr. Rajat Aggarwal.

Details about the pilot project
A spokesperson from chief minister’s office revealed that the rejuvenation work on 250 village ponds will be undertaken by the departments of the Water Supply & Sanitation and Rural Development & Panchayats.

The Zila Parishad has been authorized as the nodal agency for the implementation of the project through the village panchayats.

The technical guidance and supervision responsibility was handed over to the Technical Wings of the Rural Development and Panchayats and Water Supply & Sanitation departments.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2011.

For its second phase, the CM has ordered the Rural Development and Panchayats and Water Supply & Sanitation departments to jointly prepare a detailed action plan for the execution of rejuvenation project for the remaining ponds.

On doing so, the rain water can be properly harvested in these rejuvenated ponds and will further aid in recharging the ground water.
