ASIO chief calls movement alert list 'very fallible'

David Irvine, head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, during the Senate meeting expressed his dissatisfaction over the terrorism border alert list that names people who pose a threat to the peace of the country.

According to the ASIO chief, the movement alert list prepared by the Oz Immigration Department is ‘very fallible’.

“The movement alert list is a list of individuals. It's a very fallible document. There are people who perhaps should be on it who aren't.” Irvine said.

But, he did acknowledge that the list did serve as a potent tool for the organization in preventing suspected terrorists from entering Australia.

Federal auditor general’s report criticizes list

The movement alert list was also slammed by the May 2009 federal auditor general’s report and it said that “the list’s quality had been declining.”

But, the Immigration Department had defended the contents of the list as being an important aspect of the strategy for security and border control in Australia.

An Immigration spokesman said, ''We have every confidence in the movement alert list and we won't be drawn into an inter-agency debate.''

Senator Trood concerned about security
Meanwhile, Liberal senator Russell Trood expressed concern over entry of two senior British members of an Islamist group called Hizb ut Tahrir, last year.

Senator Trood said, “'I'm very disturbed by the fact that they seemed to have escaped everyone's attention in coming here. It didn't excite the attention of through the visa system and as a consequence it seems not to have excited any of the intelligence agencies.''

He said that even if they are allowed to enter the country should be monitored as to safeguard against any potential threat.
